A hand-knotted rug can be cleaned the same aggressive way for generations. A hand-tufted rug — even one that looks nearly identical — can come apart if it’s cleaned the wrong way even once.

“Handmade” gets used loosely in rug marketing, and it covers two very different constructions that age, and need to be cleaned, in completely different ways. Mixing them up is the single most common reason a well-meaning cleaning attempt damages an otherwise good rug.

Quick answer: Hand-knotted rugs are woven knot by knot around a warp, with no glue, and can generally be wet-cleaned and even soaked. Hand-tufted rugs have yarn punched through a canvas backing and held in place with a layer of latex adhesive, which can soften, crack, or release with the wrong cleaning method. Knowing which one you own matters more than knowing the fiber.

How each one is actually made

A hand-knotted rug is built on a loom, one knot at a time, tied directly around the warp threads — a process that can take months for a single rug. There’s no glue or backing holding it together; the structure itself is the knots. A hand-tufted rug is made much faster: yarn is punched through a woven canvas with a handheld tufting gun, then a layer of latex adhesive is applied to the back to lock the yarn in place, usually followed by a fabric backing to hide the latex.

Why the latex backing changes everything

That latex layer is the whole difference. It holds the pile in place, but it isn’t permanent — over time, and especially with excess moisture or harsh chemicals, latex can dry out, crack, or soften and become sticky. A hand-tufted rug that’s over-wetted or left damp too long can start shedding yarn in clumps, or the backing can separate from the pile entirely.

Lifespan is genuinely different

A well-maintained hand-knotted rug can last for generations; some of the antique Oriental and Persian rugs we clean are well over a century old. Hand-tufted rugs are generally built for a much shorter life, typically five to ten years, after which the latex backing starts to degrade regardless of how carefully the rug has been treated.

How to tell which one you have

Flip the rug over. A hand-knotted rug shows the knot pattern mirrored on the back, with no fabric or latex layer — you can usually see individual knots and sometimes count them per square inch. A hand-tufted rug shows a canvas or fabric backing, often with a visible layer of stiff material underneath it where the latex has been applied.

What this means for cleaning

Hand-knotted rugs can generally handle a full-immersion wash, which is also the most effective way to remove deep soil and allergens. Hand-tufted rugs need a controlled-moisture approach that avoids saturating the latex backing, along with careful, slower drying to prevent the backing from softening.

Tip: Never try to fully submerge or heavily hose down a hand-tufted rug yourself. Even a well-intentioned deep clean at home is one of the most common ways we see these rugs damaged beyond repair.

Shedding is normal for both — to a point

New rugs of either construction shed some loose fiber at first. For more on when shedding is normal versus a sign of a problem, see our guide to wool rug shedding.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tell the difference just by looking at the front?

Usually not reliably. Flip the rug over and check the backing.

Is a hand-tufted rug lower quality?

Not necessarily lower quality, but it is a different product with a shorter expected lifespan and different care needs.

Can a hand-tufted rug be professionally cleaned safely?

Yes, with a controlled-moisture method suited to the latex backing — it just can’t be treated the same as a hand-knotted rug.

Why is my hand-tufted rug shedding more than it used to?

That can signal the latex backing is starting to degrade, especially in an older or heavily used rug.

Do hand-knotted rugs ever need special care too?

Yes — fiber type, dye stability, and age all still matter, but the construction itself tolerates a more thorough wash.

Can a hand-tufted rug’s backing be repaired?

In some cases a fresh latex or backing treatment can extend its life, but a badly degraded backing usually means replacement.

Does price tell me which construction a rug is?

Not reliably. Always check the back rather than assume based on price alone.
