Oak Cliff began as Hord’s Ridge, became its own city in 1887, and was annexed by Dallas in 1903, so its rugs live in some of the oldest homes in the county.

Today Oak Cliff is a part of Dallas, but it has a history all its own. A farming community called Hord’s Ridge sat on the south bank of the Trinity River from the 1840s, when William Henry Hord arrived from Tennessee. In 1887 Thomas Marsalis and John Armstrong bought several hundred acres there, including Hord’s Ridge, and named the new development Oak Cliff. Armstrong later went north of the river to develop Highland Park, while Marsalis kept Oak Cliff and built a steam railway to downtown Dallas. Oak Cliff incorporated around 1890, hit hard times in the depression of 1893, and was annexed by the City of Dallas in 1903.

Quick answer: Oak Cliff is one of the oldest parts of Dallas, with homes that date back more than a century in places, and many of its rugs are long-owned wool and Oriental pieces that have never been professionally washed. We offer free rug pickup and delivery in Oak Cliff, wash every rug at our facility by fiber type, and return it in about 10 business days.

An independent city with its own streets and homes

Because Oak Cliff was planned and sold as a separate city before Dallas absorbed it, it grew with its own street pattern, its own rail link, and its own subdivided lots, many of which were sold to middle and working-class buyers around 1900. The result is a mix of older frame houses and bungalows that have been lived in, renovated, and handed down through several owners. Rugs in houses like these are often a generation or more old, and they have collected decades of grit.

What century-old houses do to rugs

Older homes tend to have original wood floors, drafty windows, and little modern air filtration, so dust and outdoor grit travel easily into the pile. If a rug has been in the same room for 15 years or more, the soil is deep in the foundation and a vacuum will not reach it. Read what clay dust really does to a rug and keep up with correct vacuuming for wool between washes.

Heirloom rugs and renovation dust

Oak Cliff has seen a lot of renovation in recent decades, and sanding, demolition, and painting leave fine dust in every rug in the house. If you have inherited a piece or bought one at an estate sale, have it inspected before it is washed. Our guide on antique rug cleaning explains what a careful inspection covers.

  • Spring: Open windows bring pollen and storm grit onto entry rugs.
  • Summer: Strong afternoon sun through older windows fades rugs unevenly; see our rotation guide.
  • Fall: Houses close up and dust and pet odor build before the holidays.
  • Winter: Entertaining adds spills and heavy traffic to dining and living room rugs.

Tip: A rug that has lived in an older house for years often looks fine on top and is heavy with soil underneath. Lift a corner and tap the back over a white sheet; if a cloud of dust falls out, it is overdue for a wash.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer free pickup and delivery in Oak Cliff?

Yes, throughout the neighborhood and the surrounding parts of Dallas.

Can you clean rugs that have been in my home for decades?

Yes. We inspect dye stability and foundation condition first and choose a gentle, fiber-specific method.

How long will my rug be gone?

Typically about 10 business days, including a full, controlled dry.

Will cleaning fade my rug’s colors?

A properly done wash does not. We test dyes before washing, and harsh chemicals or high heat are what cause damage.

Can you remove old pet odor?

Often, yes. A facility wash reaches the base of the pile, which surface cleaning cannot.

Will I know the price before you start?

Yes. Pricing is confirmed upfront by size, fiber, and condition.

Do you also serve Duncanville, Cedar Hill, and the rest of Dallas?

Yes, our free pickup and delivery covers the surrounding DFW area.
